Zwillbrock Venn & the Flamingos

Just 1km from Hotel Restaurant Kloppendiek lies the stunning Zwillbrock Venn, one of Germany’s most fascinating nature reserves. This wetland marks the natural border between Münsterland and the Dutch Achterhoek.

Formed in the 18th century through peat extraction, the Venn is now a protected area of European significance. Its marshes and lakes attract thousands of birds each year, including the northernmost flamingo colony in Europe.

The best time to see the flamingos is from April to July, when they nest and raise their chicks in the shallow waters – a truly spectacular sight!

Walking and cycling trails with viewing platforms surround the reserve. The nearby Biological Station Zwillbrock offers fascinating insights into the area’s nature, wildlife, and conservation.

The best time to spot the flamingos at Zwillbrock Venn is from April to July, when they nest and raise their chicks in the shallow waters.
During spring and early summer, the wetlands turn a soft shade of pink – a breathtaking sight.
By August, most flamingos migrate south, though a few may remain until autumn.
