30.06.2026 – 14 fluffy flamingo chicks

Flamingo chicks hatch with a straight bill. Before long, the bill develops its characteristic curve, and the fine filter-like lamellae begin to form, allowing the birds to filter food from the water later in life.

During the first weeks of their lives, the chicks grow remarkably fast. Their legs become longer, stronger, and gradually turn darker. Their soft, fluffy down remains for several weeks before slowly giving way to the brownish juvenile plumage and their first true feathers.

The young flamingos also begin practising their wing movements at an early age. However, it still takes about 12 to 14 weeks before they are able to take their first real flight.

As mentioned previously, the flamingo kindergarten provides a safe haven for the chicks. Here they develop important social behaviour by doing almost everything together. They feed, rest, preen their feathers, and stay close to one another as a group.

With 14 flamingo chicks now living at the Zwillbrocker Venn and a considerable age difference between the youngest and the oldest chicks, it is becoming increasingly challenging for the smallest birds to keep up with the rest of the group. Fortunately, the adult flamingos continue to keep a watchful eye on their young.

The coming days and weeks will therefore be particularly important for the youngest chicks.
