A visit to the flamingos at the Zwillbrocker Venn is already a special experience. Located close to the German-Dutch border, this beautiful nature reserve is well known for its flamingos. But there is something else that makes these remarkable birds fascinating: flamingo chicks receive a special type of food often called ‘flamingo milk’.

What is flamingo milk?

Despite its name, flamingo milk is not milk like that produced by mammals. Flamingos produce a highly nutritious liquid in the upper part of their digestive system.

This so-called crop milk is rich in fats and proteins, providing young flamingos with the nutrients they need during their early development.

The liquid can have a striking reddish or pink colour. This is partly due to carotenoids, natural pigments that also contribute to the characteristic pink colour of adult flamingos.

How do flamingos feed their chicks?

The parent regurgitates the nutrient-rich liquid and feeds it directly to the chick through its beak. This special food is particularly important during the first weeks of the chick’s life.

As the young flamingo grows, its diet gradually changes. Eventually, it learns how to filter its own food from the water.

Another fascinating fact is that both male and female flamingos can produce crop milk. Raising and feeding a chick is therefore truly a shared responsibility.
